I started wearing make-up in junior high. My make-up application was primitive at best. It consisted of a shaky, squiggled application of eyeliner across the lids of my eyes, clumpy mascara, and pimple concealer in a light shade of orange. Add a little lipstick and you had yourself Batman’s Joker, only with big bangs and shoulder pads.
I somewhat expected Lexi’s first attempts at make-up application to follow a similar evolution. However, this hasn’t been the case at all. In fact her make-up application abilities have already far surpassed my own. She’s able to do things like apply black eyeliner to the inner lashes of her bottom lids. This is a make-up technique that I find as difficult to master as juggling a set of knives while looking into the sun.
It makes me wonder what other skills she has, which have eluded me. I've never been able to whistle. Who knows. Maybe Lexi will be a strong whistler. I've promised myself that I'd never vicariously live through my children. But when you've gone your whole life without whistling, well I mean, I may need to make an exception.

I never consistently wore makeup as a kid, so now that I'm 31, my makeup skills are probably similar to what yours were in junior high. Luckily, my skin has cooperated thus far and has not required too much assistance. But the older I get, the more the mirror is telling me, um, yeah, it's almost over, kid - you should start getting familiar with your Clinique counter.
Sweetie, you're too young for the Clinique counter...scootch on over to the MAC or Smashbox counter and get yourself some body glitter!
Oh mah Gah I LOVE THIS! This is so true. The pimple concealer.. that was SO me in middle school. wow
Annah-----I checked out your blog. You are insane. And I mean that in a good way.
as someone who *also* knew how to apply eyeliner to my lower-inside eye thing:
i must make my obligatory feminist comment that although she looks pretty rock n' roll, i hope she never ever thinks that she is only/the most beautiful when she has make-up on.
she is clearly a very confident takes-no-shit gal, but it is hard to ignore the pressure to always look like a model.
and no fellow readers, i am not attacking Meredith so don't even start.
i just wanted to say that I think Lex looks the most nice when she is sans eyeliner
(private to Lexi: when people look at pictures of me when i was in high school with tons of make-up on, they turn to me now (make-up free as you know) and say "wow you look so much younger now." so my advice is to wear some fun stuff to increase your conveyed maturity level and then wash it off once you start getting eye wrinkles at around 24. love, mel)
