So yesterday's post was all, 'Woe is me. I hate winter. Why does there have to be weather?' and that kind of whining is just insufferable. So today, I'm going to focus on what I'm grateful for in my life, because I'm a grateful person. I'm grateful like Oprah. I'm kind like Oprah, except Oprah has billions of dollars, and I have less than billions of dollars.
Now that we all agree I'm like Oprah, let me show you something which makes me feel very grateful...pictures of a home we rented while we lived in Mexico.
People always ask us why we moved to Mexico. We tell them we moved to Mexico because 1] the dollar stretches like a contortionist there 2] it's cheap and 3] it's Mexico. This house cost us $40 a month. No, not really, however, it was much less than what we would have paid in the US. We probably paid in rent what Oprah spends on date night with Stedman. Again, I know, so much like Oprah.
Anyway, here's the house:

View from the street.

Entry. [The Realtor sent us these photos. The house was never this picked-up.]

Front room. One of the only rooms in the house which was air conditioned. It's also where I started this blog.]

This photo was taken standing in the front room [in the above photo]. The two doors on the right open to bedrooms.

The door straight ahead leads to the front room. The stairs on the right go up to the kitchen.

Here's the kitchen. The mosquitoes were so bad that we needed to wear bug repellent whenever we cooked. I know. Poor us.

Dining room.

Covered area just off the pool. It's where we spent most of our time, obviously.

Da pool.

View from 3rd floor patio overlooking the cathedral.
So there it is, and I'm so grateful to have had the opportunity to live in Mexico and live there in such a beautiful home. That house really is unbelievable, right? And isn't throwing photos of our "paradise with a front door" in your face so much less insufferable than the whining?

My husband is from Mexico and we have been talking more and more about moving there. Seeing your pictures makes me likely to agree. I worry about finding a house, not really speaking good Spanish, those sort of things.
How exciting for you! Housing was easy to come by where we were [in Merida]. It took me about 6 months to speak enough Spanish to have a simple conversation. [I've forgotten everything though!] But with your husband speaking the language it would probably be easier for you.
Just wondering where in Mexico that was. Also, did you have kids at that time?
It's in the Centro area of Merida, about 4 hours west of Cancun.
Yeah, we had all three kids there. Heidi was 18 months old and Whitney was 3 yo. We were crazy!
Totally think that's awesome! My husband and I are heading down to Chile this September with our ninos (6 & 3). A little more expensive than Mexico, but very much looking forward to the different culture.
Thanks for sharing!
That is one of the pimpest houses ever. And you forgot non-stop churros and enchiladas. That's reason enough for me to move there. Well, um, like 5 years ago. Not now. Sad.
Yeah, the street food there was pretty awesome too!
Thinking that if I leave work now, could be home, packed and on my way to Mexico by 2 p.m...
Yeah, bump up leaving for paradise on your 'To-Do' list today!
Love the house, starting to like you a little less though...
just kidding, I'm just being envious, very, very envious.
The weather here has been pretty schizophrenic too: "oh, look, the sun is out, spring is just around the corner you can put your wooly hat away" next day: "freezing rain, yes, freezing rain, why would you want to go out anyway, it's still winter"; "how bout a nice balmy breeze, oh, it feels so good, time for a pedicure!"; "Snow, ha,ha, ha, that's what we needed! some more snow! Shoveling snow is such great exercise before summer comes!"; "Oh, look, the sun is out...."
Would so happily move to Mexico for a while now, right now... actually maybe I should go pack.
Yeah, I think I'm much more lovable when I'm whining. Luckily, I'm so good at it.
Can you go back there, so I can come visit you and come back home and whine? There's drool running down my chin right now!
I know. Seems almost unfair to get the benefit of living in a place like that PLUS whining. Life isn't fair.
Whining is always allowed... especially b/c you have to listen to it from everybody else! Just don't be surprised when I whine back! lol
I had the most amazing privlege of staying there and visiting and it is way better than the photos even show. Some of my favorite life memories were in that house! Move to another cool place so we can come visit, will ya??!!
Ahem. Why would I do that now that you live in paradise?!
oh my gosh that house is to die for. i love it. i want it.
I know. I wanted to put it in my pocket and bring it back home with me...but UGH customs!
Thank you so much for posting this recipe! I have watched both my mom and mother-in-law cook their beans, I go home & try to mimick them, and for whatever reason, my beans never come close! Your recipe is the only one so far that I’ve tried where the outcome truly does taste authentic, so many thanks again!Quick question if you don’t mind–though the beans came out delicious, I had a little problem with beans bursting. I plan on using half for refried beans, but I do plan on keeoing the rest whole. It’s an asthetic (sp?) thing, but do you know what could have caused this? I followed the recipe, cooked them uncovered for about 2.5 hrs, & watched the water level all throughout.
Having seen the photos, the question now is why did you ever come home? That place is amazing!
I ask myself this daily!
::SWOON::
Yup.
